What is PAT testing?

Portable Appliance Testing
for Essex businesses.

PAT testing - formally known as portable appliance testing - is the process of checking electrical equipment and appliances to ensure they are safe for use in the workplace or rental property. It involves a combination of visual inspections and electrical tests carried out using specialist equipment.

RTF Compliance provides PAT testing across Essex and Chelmsford for businesses of all sizes, landlords, schools, event organisers and commercial premises. Richard is a member of the Portable Appliance Testing Association (PATA), providing assurance that testing is carried out to the recognised industry standard.

What does PAT testing involve?

Each test covers two stages:

Visual inspection

Checking the appliance, cable, plug and any adaptors for visible damage, signs of overheating, incorrect fusing or unsafe modifications.

Electrical tests

Testing earth continuity, insulation resistance and where applicable, leakage current - using calibrated PAT testing equipment.

Labelling

Each passed appliance is labelled with the test date and next due date, providing a clear visible record for your staff and auditors.

Test certificate

A full written certificate listing every appliance tested, its result and any remedial actions required. Issued on the same day.

How often does PAT testing need to be done?

There is no single legal interval. The HSE recommends a risk-based approach - the frequency depends on the type of equipment, how it is used, and the environment it operates in. As a general guide:

EnvironmentRecommended interval
Office or low-risk commercialEvery 2–4 years
Retail, education or public buildingsEvery 1–2 years
Construction sites and high-risk areasAnnually or more frequently
Hotels and HMO rental propertiesAnnually
Equipment used by the public (e.g. hire)Before each use or regularly

RTF Compliance will advise the correct testing schedule for your specific premises and equipment at no extra charge, and can set up an annual reminder service so your certificates never lapse.

PAT testing questions

Frequently asked
questions.

Common questions about portable appliance testing from Essex businesses and landlords.

Call 01245 201579
  • PAT testing itself is not specified in law, but the duty to maintain safe electrical equipment is - under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. PAT testing is the recognised method for demonstrating compliance with this duty. In practice, insurers and regulatory bodies routinely ask for valid PAT test certificates.

  • Testing speed depends on the number and type of appliances. As a rough guide, a typical office with 50 items can be tested in 2–3 hours. Richard will provide an estimated duration when booking so you can plan accordingly. Out-of-hours visits are available to avoid disruption to your working day.

  • It helps to have items accessible and to notify staff in advance so computers and equipment can be saved and briefly powered down during testing. Richard will work with you to minimise the time each item is out of service. An existing appliance register, if you have one, is also useful but not required.

  • The Portable Appliance Testing Association (PATA) is the UK's recognised trade body for PAT testing engineers. Membership demonstrates that the engineer has undergone the required training and testing to carry out PAT testing to the correct standard. RTF Compliance is a PATA member, giving you confidence in the quality of the work carried out.
