Portable Appliance Testing
for Essex businesses.
PAT testing - formally known as portable appliance testing - is the process of checking electrical equipment and appliances to ensure they are safe for use in the workplace or rental property. It involves a combination of visual inspections and electrical tests carried out using specialist equipment.
RTF Compliance provides PAT testing across Essex and Chelmsford for businesses of all sizes, landlords, schools, event organisers and commercial premises. Richard is a member of the Portable Appliance Testing Association (PATA), providing assurance that testing is carried out to the recognised industry standard.
Legal position: The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 require employers to ensure that electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. The HSE recommends PAT testing as part of an effective electrical maintenance programme. Failure to maintain safe electrical equipment can result in fines, prosecution or, in the event of an incident, civil liability.
What does PAT testing involve?
Each test covers two stages:
Visual inspection
Checking the appliance, cable, plug and any adaptors for visible damage, signs of overheating, incorrect fusing or unsafe modifications.
Electrical tests
Testing earth continuity, insulation resistance and where applicable, leakage current - using calibrated PAT testing equipment.
Labelling
Each passed appliance is labelled with the test date and next due date, providing a clear visible record for your staff and auditors.
Test certificate
A full written certificate listing every appliance tested, its result and any remedial actions required. Issued on the same day.
How often does PAT testing need to be done?
There is no single legal interval. The HSE recommends a risk-based approach - the frequency depends on the type of equipment, how it is used, and the environment it operates in. As a general guide:
| Environment | Recommended interval |
|---|---|
| Office or low-risk commercial | Every 2–4 years |
| Retail, education or public buildings | Every 1–2 years |
| Construction sites and high-risk areas | Annually or more frequently |
| Hotels and HMO rental properties | Annually |
| Equipment used by the public (e.g. hire) | Before each use or regularly |
RTF Compliance will advise the correct testing schedule for your specific premises and equipment at no extra charge, and can set up an annual reminder service so your certificates never lapse.
